Аннотация
This article provides a comparative analysis of studies on two aspects of ancient Ferghana history whose polemics and debates have intensified over the past 20 years. This debate concerns the location of the ancient Ferghana state and the differences in approach to identifying the location of its capital. Comparing the information from Chinese chronicles with evidence from archaeological excavations have allowed researchers to conclude that
«Dawan corresponds, if not to the entire Ferghana Valley, then to some of its parts» or «Dawan, Polona, Bohan, and subsequently Ninyuan corresponded to various regions of Ferghana.» Since the 19th century the Ferghana historiography uses the term «Dawan» to denote an ancient state that existed in the Ferghana Valley. But today,an extended analysis of the written data has revealed a number of errors and shortcomings in the previous
translations of Chinese primary sources. The Uzbek sinologist Ablat Khojayev, based on the information of the Chinese chronicles, translates the names «Dawan» and «Dai-yuan» as «Big Ferghana» or «Greater Ferghana,»denoting both the valley as a whole and the local state. Using the same written sources, the divergent positions are trying to shed light on the historical events associated with two major archaeological sites on the territory of modern Uzbekistan. These are Akhsiket (Namangan region) and Mingtepa (Andijan region), where longterm excavations have been conducted for an extended period of time. Some of the results of these studies are presented by this author’s article through his lens of nderstanding concerning the ancient history of Ferghana.
