Аннотация
This article, which is based on the Muslim periodicals of Turkestan and the Russian Empire (Shuro, Al-Islah, Oyina, etc.) along with manuscripts and early printed books in the Persian-Tajik and Turkic-Uzbek languages, considers ways of mastering the ideas and achievements of European and Russian culture as well as the notions of art in the first decades of the 20th century (prior to the beginnings of the drastic changes during the Soviet era) on the part of the traditional culture of Turkestan. «Culture» (in Turkic languages known as madaniyat), «Islamic culture,» and their different meanings are included in their public context along with a new conceptual and terminological «glossary» of art and artistic culture. It reveals differences in the interpretation concerning the innovations of theological thought between traditional canonical Islam and the educational secular-religious ideas of the Jadids (in particular, Mahmud-Khoja Behbudi). The attitude towards the fine arts, music, residential architecture, along with the aestheticized-hedonistic lifestyle of the new generation of Muslims became more acute in connection with the notions of the “end times” (ohir zamon). Some
traditional philosophical and aesthetic medieval concepts and categories became more popular as pertaining to the meaning of the «Eternal Artist,» «uncontrived nature,” and “good memory,» etc.
